Epilepsy Association Virtual Runner Team Kick-Off and Training Run
8:00 AM
the Epilepsy Association will be holding its Virtual Runner Team Kick-Off and Training Run for the 2010 Virtual Runner Competition. This competition allows participants to help raise funds to support friends and neighbors with seizure disorders by dedicating their fall racing season to the Epilepsy Association. Any race that runners choose to participate in during the competition will count in the virtual competition.
Virtual Runner Team Kick-Off Schedule
• Registration starts at 8:00 a.m.
• Program begins at 8:45 a.m.
• Training run begins at 9:00 a.m.
• Breakfast starts at 10:00 a.m.
Leading the training run for the 2nd Annual Virtual Runner Event is Debra Horn, 4-time member of the US 24-Hour racing team, Ultra-Marathoner and Honorary Chairperson and Virtual Runner Team Captain.
“In November of 2006, Lucy Johnson, the youngest child of my running partner, Karen, had her first seizure. Lucy was just two years old. A few months later, Lucy was diagnosed with epilepsy. Over the next two years, as Karen and I logged miles during our daily morning runs, I listened to the ups and downs of Lucy’s struggle with epilepsy,” said Horn.
“When Lucy’s parents needed information, support and first aid training, they turned to the Epilepsy Association. It’s the only community resource in Northeast Ohio supporting individuals with epilepsy, their families and caregivers.”
By witnessing Lucy’s experience, Horn was inspired to use running as a way to help the Epilepsy Association increase its services to individuals with epilepsy and their families. “I’m a dedicated runner. Since Lucy’s first seizure, I’ve logged over 1,500 race miles in Ohio, throughout the United States and in other countries. Now I have the opportunity to make those race miles count for something more.”
In 2009, 34 runners raised $16,500 and raced 1,117 miles in 13 weeks to benefit the Epilepsy Association.
