Hospice of the Western Reserve Volunteer Opportunities
9:00 AM - 4:00 PM
Volunteers are an essential part of our team and are needed now more than ever. We are looking for new volunteers to serve patients and families in our Hospice and Palliative Care programs. Volunteers are needed to make phone calls to patients, make virtual visits, send cards, and serve in our Veterans Serving Veterans, Pet Piece of Mind, and End of Life Doula programs. Reception desk volunteers are also needed at our Headquarters and David Simpson Hospice House locations in Cleveland. Two virtual training series are held every month for new volunteers. The next virtual volunteer training series will be held on Saturdays, June 5 and 12 from 9 am - 4 pm or Tuesdays and Thursdays, June 1, 3, 8, and 10 from 9 am - 12 pm. Pre-requisites must be met before registering for a class series. Start the process by filling out an application online at hospicewr.org/volunteer or call 216-255-9090.

Westlake Music Academy Expansion and Open House
10:30 AM - 3:00 PM
The Westlake Music Academy (WMA) is happy to announce its recent expansion, nearly tripling its previous space. To celebrate and to unveil the new space, the academy is hosting an Open House on Saturday, June 5.
Director James Flood opened the Westlake Music Academy in the spring of 2019, transferring 40 students from his previous business, James Flood Guitar Lessons. Despite a 28% drop in enrollment during the pandemic lockdown, WMA’s numbers quickly began to rebound in June 2020. Enrollment has doubled since the pandemic. In just two short years since WMA’s founding, student enrollment has grown from 40 to 270 students.
What began with a single guitar teacher operating from his own home has grown to a music academy with 20 teachers offering lessons in eleven instruments. Not only that, but the Westlake Music Academy won Cleveland Magazine’s Best of the West award for music schools in its first year.
One thing that sets WMA apart is its focus on music education excellence. Flood, himself holding bachelor’s and master’s degrees in classical guitar performance with 30 years’ teaching experience, specially hand-picked a similarly committed faculty. The teachers are friendly and engaging with at minimum a bachelor’s degree in their instrument. The majority hold master’s degrees, with many coming from prestigious conservatories. In addition, the faculty all meet twice a month to discuss how to improve their teaching. Thus, the academy has a team chosen not only for their distinguished skills as musicians, but also for their unique talent for and love of teaching.
WMA offers lessons in piano, guitar, voice, violin, viola, cello, drums, ukulele, flute, and double bass. Lessons are available for young children all the way through adults. Adult students range in age from 18 to 75. Additional advantages of the Westlake Music Academy include its free optional recitals and use of a fun system where children earn wristbands and trophies.
This spring the academy has expanded from Its initial 1,100-square-foot space to utilizing the whole building, with 2,850 square feet. Three months of renovation have yielded three new studios—including a 400-square-foot studio for classes and small recitals—and a cheerful, high-ceilinged waiting room. Future plans include renovations to add more studios.
All are invited to view the newly expanded Westlake Music Academy during its Open House on Saturday, June 5, 2021, from 10:30 AM to 3:00 PM. There will be tours, 2 free group voice classes, and an instrument “petting zoo,” where visitors can try out different instruments with the aid of our teachers. There will also be mini-performances by some of our teachers and free refreshments.
