Homeless Jesus sculpture on display in Westlake

This thought-provoking piece created by Canadian sculptor Timothy Schmalz will be displayed at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, 28455 Center Ridge Road, from March 9 to May 4, 2020. Jesus is portrayed as a homeless person, sleeping on a park bench. His face and hands are obscured, hidden under a blanket but crucifixion wounds on his feet reveal his identity. The statue has been described as a visual translation of the Gospel of Matthew passage in which Jesus tells his disciples, "as you did it to one of the least of my brothers, you did it to me."

The piece is "love made visible to touch our hearts, inspire kindness, love and charity." You are invited to sit on the bench and consider the possibility. Donations of socks for homeless shelter residents will be collected.
