History and myths of lighthouses talk at the Bay library May 12
Standing tall and solitary along the shores of Lake Erie, lighthouses have long been the subject of tales of hauntings, tragedies and romance. On Wednesday, May 12, at 7:00 p.m., the Bay Village Branch of the Cuyahoga County Public Library will host Mike and Georgann Wachter, authors of a series of books called Erie Wrecks. They will discuss the history and myths surrounding lighthouses in their presentation, “Erie Lighthouses and Lore.”
For over 30 years, the Wachters have dived in Lake Erie to search for the many shipwrecks scattered throughout. While pursuing shipwrecks in eastern Lake Erie, they became fascinated with Mohawk Island Lighthouse in Ontario. They had questions about this crumbling lighthouse. Why was it there? Why had it been abandoned? Why was it forsaken? This quest led to their extensive research into Lake Erie lighthouses.
The Wachters are accomplished researchers and speakers. They have spoken for many organizations including Ohio Council of Skin and Scuba Divers, Great Lakes Underwater, Ghost Ships Festival, libraries and museums. You won’t want to miss this fascinating presentation. Please register by calling the library at 440.871.6392 or by visiting the website at www.cuyahogalibrary.org.
