Kate Humphrey, a Westlake High School senior art student, and Chris Dunlap, a WHS freshman, received national Gold Key awards in the 2010 National Scholastic Art & Writing Awards.

Kate earned a Gold Key award for an altered book sculpture, “The Birds.” Chris won a Gold Key award and an American Vision medal for his metal embossing of “Old Church.”

Kate, Chris and their families will travel to New York City with their teachers, Christine Filmer and Debra Gantz, to receive their awards at Carnegie Hall.

There were more than 165,000 submissions this year. Teens from Alaska to Maine submitted poems, plays and personal essays; hats made of paper and birds made from books; and self-portraits in almost every kind of media.

More than 1,300 creative teens received National Gold and Silver medals, and 15 Portfolio Gold Medalists earned $10,000 scholarships.

Visit the online gallery to view national works from 2010, selections of which will be on display at the World Financial Center in New York City this summer.
