Community shows up to support Bay city schools

The Bay Village Education Foundation, entering its 25th year, held its most successful fundraising event ever at the end of January. Approximately 140 people attended the fourth annual fundraiser, “Creating Opportunities,” at Arrabiata’s in Bay Village. Attendees enjoyed food and drinks while they listened hopefully for their name to be drawn for one of over 30 door prizes.

In addition, guests placed bids on their favorite silent auction items. Items ranged from local restaurant gift certificates to artwork to sports packages. One of the most popular items was three hours of manual labor to be performed by Bay High’s principal, Jim Cahoon. The event was emceed by the Foundation President, Rhonda Schneider, and event Chairman, Dwight Clark. Because of the generous contributions of local businesses and attendees, the Bay Village Education Foundation raised over $15,000.

The other major fundraising endeavor for the Foundation this school year was the Ten Campaign. This campaign generated almost $4,000 from families, teachers and staff in the Bay Village Schools. The highest level of participation was at Normandy Elementary, which was rewarded with a check for $375 for a project of their choice.

The Foundation’s fundraising efforts provide grants to the various public schools within the Bay Village school district. The schools have provided unique learning opportunities with the many grants awarded, including iPod Touches for the classroom, new playground equipment, Smart Board technology, a memorial garden, Ohio History and Science projects, programs for students with special needs, and many others. As always, the Bay Village Education Foundation is extremely grateful for the generosity shown by the community toward the enhancement of our schools.

Elaine Korte is the Vice President of the Bay Village Education Foundation.
