Bay Village Schools students honored at 33rd Scholastic Arts Competition
Bay Village City School District students garnered five first-place Gold Key awards, nine second-place Silver Key awards, and 12 Honorable Mention awards from a field of 1,700 entries in the 2012 Cuyahoga County Regional Scholastic Arts competition.
Winning a Gold Key were Bay High sophomore Gracie Harms (painting), Bay High freshmen Maddie Voiers (fashion) and Severn Sanders (mixed media), and Bay Middle School seventh-grader Grace Mansuetto (printmaking). In addition to visual arts winners, eighth-grader Emma Chalk won a Gold Key for her short story, "Memories of Us." Students who receive Gold Key Awards see their work continue to the national competition held in the spring in New York City.
Winning Silver Key awards were Bay High senior Elise Aronson (drawing); Bay High juniors Cameron Meaking (two for drawing, one for painting and one for design) and Katie Allen (painting); Bay High sophomores Elizabeth Auckely (painting) and Julia Engelhardt (printmaking); and Bay Middle School eighth-grader Emma Smith (jewelry).
Twelve honorable mentions were awarded to: Bay High seniors Jessica Johns (photography), Matthew Miller (ceramics and glass) and Sara Wolf (photography); juniors Alissa Kokke (two for painting), Elyse Sopa (painting) and Kristen Zeuch (painting); freshman Fiona Allen (digital art); and to Bay Middle School eighth-graders Rachel Hamilton (printmaking) and Annie McArn (ceramics/glass); and seventh-graders Alexandra Hoffman (ceramics/glass) and Alexis Nakonechni (ceramics/glass).
Awards were for work completed in the students' 2010-2011 academic year. The work is on exhibit at the Cleveland Institute of Art, Reinberger Galleries, 11141 East Blvd. in Cleveland through Feb. 4 (Sundays 1–5 p.m., Mondays through Saturdays 10 a.m.-6 p.m., and Fridays 9 a.m.-9 p.m.).
Bay High art instructors are Cherie Bauer, Denise Ross and Thomas Schemrich. Bay Middle School art instructors are Greg Leininger and Gloria Wilder.
Since its start in 1927, the Scholastic Art Awards have acted as a venue for the community to view the exceptional artwork of public, private, parochial, and home-schooled students between the 7th and 12th grades.
