LBMS students place in international art contest
Four Lee Burneson Middle School seventh-graders placed in the top 100 for their entries in the international Rock the Statue Green Contest.
The contest was sponsored by the French Embassy to celebrate the 125th birthday of the Statue of Liberty – a gift to the United States from France. The contest challenged students to create a replica of the Statue of Liberty using recycled materials.
Out of 4,000 entries from across the United States, France and other Francophone countries, three LBMS students – Abriha Abuhamdeh, Robert Picard and Noor Tamim – placed in the top 100. Sarmad Al-Aish was among the 65 semi-finalists.
Sarmad and Abriha created sculptures – "Solid Liberty" and "Green Lady," respectively – out of recycled clay; Robert used Coca-Cola and Sprite cans for his "Green is Refreshing" collage, while Noor used recycled cereal boxes for her "Breakfast of Liberty" collage. All are students in Luda Grossman’s world language class.
