News and notes from the Bay Community Council meeting
BAYarts hosted the Jan. 12 meeting at its beautifully renovated Irene Fuller House. Refreshments were served and tours of the facility were conducted after the meeting. Here are some of the Bay Village community events coming up this month.
The Women’s Board at the Lake Erie Nature and Science Center will hold its Fireside Dinner on Jan. 20 and a salad luncheon on Feb. 1. Winter programs at the Center include a family fun night “Owl Prowl” on Jan. 25, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., and the “Animal Encounters” behind-the-scenes tour on Feb. 8, from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., and 8 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Kristen Stanford of The Ohio State University will present a program on Lake Erie water snakes as part of the Lake Erie 101 series on Feb. 9. The March program will focus on coyotes.
The Bay Village Garden Club raised $2,800 as a result of this holiday season’s “Greening of Bay” craft classes.
The Bay Village Kiwanis donated $2,620 to the Bay Education Foundation to fund three projects recommended by school principals. They also donated $1,050 to the Bay Band Boosters to purchase two new band uniforms. The annual Christmas tree sale netted $6,200 from the sale of 275 trees. The Bay High Choraleers entertained at the Kiwanis’ Christmas party, held at the Wood Fire Grill in Avon Lake. The 14th Division Kiwanis Lenten Breakfast Series begins on Ash Wednesday, Feb. 22, at Bay Presbyterian Church. A spring pancake breakfast is planned for March 25 at Bay Middle School. Proceeds will go towards scholarships for Bay High graduates. Last year, Kiwanis donated $11,250 for scholarships.
The Bay Village Women’s Club Foundation Antique Show and Sale is Feb. 18 and Feb. 19 at Bay High School. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. Jewelry appraisals are Feb. 18, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Antique appraisals are Feb. 19, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
The Bay Men’s Club now has over 100 paid members. The December meeting speaker was a border patrol officer. The February meeting is the first Thursday of the month at Bay Lodge, beginning at 7 p.m.
BAYarts’ holiday shop exceeded all previous sales records. The Fuller House is available for parties and meetings, along with catering by Diana Brewer.
The Bay Soccer Club is using proceeds from its annual Challenge Cup competition to hire licensed coaches and college players to work with individual age groups.
The Martha Devotion Huntington Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution accepts members who can prove lineal descent from a patriot of the Revolutionary War. The Peter Navarre Chapter of the United States Daughter of 1812 is preparing for the War of 1812 Bicentennial, which begins in June, by offering coloring books highlighting the war’s important events. Sept. 10, 2013, is Remembrance Day of the War of 1812. The day is being celebrated at Put-in-Bay with a Bicentennial of the Battle of Lake Erie tall ship battle reenactment. The 43rd annual Bay Village Historical Society crafts and collectibles show, newly renamed “Cahoon in June,” is June 16, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in beautiful and historic Cahoon Memorial Park. The show attracts a wide variety of collectible and antique dealers, crafters, artists and demonstrators and more than 1,500 buyers. Totally revamped for greater success, this year’s event will include a wide variety of delicious food, live music, a children’s activities tent, historic city bus tours and more.
