Have you ever heard of Destination Imagination? Well, it is hard for me to explain, but it is where kids use their imaginations to solve challenges. I am part of a Destination Imagination or “DI” team at Westerly School with Eliza Aleksandrovic, Grace Chilton, Caroline Fowles, Ava Ransom, Olivia Reed and Patty Yuhas. Our team name is the Aqua Girls.
This year we chose the community service project challenge, and the community service project we chose is to clean up Huntington Beach. We chose to clean up the beach because when we were on a class field trip in the fall we learned and saw how dirty the beach is. But in order to clean up the beach we need to raise money to buy the supplies so we decided to do a fundraiser.
The fundraiser was a pie-throwing raffle and we called it Pie Palooza. Back in December we met with Miss Josie Caputo, our principal, and asked if she would let us sell tickets for 25 cents each to the students for the chance to throw a pie at the teachers.
We had 16 teachers and staff members including Miss Caputo volunteer to have a pie thrown at them. We sold tickets at lunch and recess for four days in the beginning of January. We hoped to raise $100 and we actually raised $328.20. We were amazed by the generosity of our fellow students and the Westerly staff! (The 20 cents was donated by my two-year-old brother.)
The Pie Palooza was a lot of fun and a huge success! But it’s just the beginning of our project. Now our team has to work on the plans to clean up the beach. Stay tuned for more information about our project and how you can get involved. Go Aqua Girls!
