Westlake Magazine showcases city's attributes

Westlake Magazine honoree Dr. J. Michael Thomson of Tri-C Westshore receives a plaque of recognition from Mayor Dennis Clough.

On Jan. 10, Westlake held its 11th annual Westlake Magazine reception at Westlake City Hall. The reception was the City’s opportunity to thank the magazine and the businesses that advertised in them.

“Once a year, the city has the opportunity to showcase the community while at the same time, provide a valuable resource to residents and visitors,” said Mayor Dennis Clough. “The value of this publication is demonstrated by its publication for the past 11 years.”

Westlake Magazine is mailed to all businesses and residents in Westlake at no charge to the residents or City by Great Lakes Publishing. The mailing is made possible by the advertisers who support the magazine, without them, the magazine wouldn’t be the resource that it is.

On the cover of the magazine is a picture of the Westlake High School Marching Band as they participate in the Fourth of July parade. In the center of the picture is sousaphone (tuba) player Tom Carroll, to his right is fellow sousaphone player Ryan Thaxton, followed by recent graduate Dan Meehan on percussion.

Featured in the Westlake Magazine are articles about the time capsule that celebrated Westlake’s recent 200th birthday, a project led by Eagle Scout candidate Evan Keleman. Also featured are articles celebrating Westlake’s Sister City of Tralee, Ireland, where the two communities recently exchanged student art exhibits, and where the Northern Ohio Rose Bridget Linton competed for the Rose of Tralee at the Regional Finals. Westlake welcomed Mayor Grace O’Donnell of Tralee for a visit last July.

Other articles introduce the reader to “Up and Coming” members of the business community, how many different organizations and businesses can help you to live healthier, as well as an introduction to numerous boutiques located throughout the city. The section called “Faces of Westlake” introduces the reader to four individuals who volunteer much of their time to civic projects and help to make Westlake the great community that it is.

Another feature included is the announcement of the winners for the 2011 Westlake In Bloom competition. Planning Director Robert Parry takes a very hands-on approach to this annual event and personally photographs each entrant and their gardens or property for judging. This past year, over 75 properties were photographed and some of those gardens are included in the magazine.

The magazine is circulated to approximately 14,000 households and 2,000 businesses in Westlake. The latest edition contains a residents guide, listing for local restaurants and articles about local businesses and people. A digital copy is available for viewing on the city’s website at www.cityofwestlake.org. It provides the reader a good introduction to the city, the business community and what makes Westlake such a great place.
