Bay Middle School eighth-grader Moira Meehan wins MLK contest

Moira Meehan, an eighth-grade student at Bay Middle School, won a $500 savings bond for her design of a birthday card celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s 83rd birthday.

Moira's card featured an American flag on the cover with the message, "Happy 83rd Birthday Dr. King!" The inside of the card carried a black and white sketch of Dr. King superimposed over the flag and surrounded by a poetic quote about the famous civil rights leader.

Moira and her parents, Eileen and Patrick Meehan, attended the Twelfth Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Breakfast Celebration on Jan. 15, held at the Marriott Hotel at Key Center in Cleveland. The 2011 Class of MLK Holiday Scholars and their parents heard Ohio Supreme Court Justice Yvette McGee Brown speak.

Moira is planning to use some of the funds to study at the Cleveland Institute of Art this summer.
