Maggie Williams to compete at state-level Power of the Pen

Eighth-grader Maggie Williams will compete at the state-level Power of the Pen competition at The College of Wooster in May.

Bay Middle School eighth-grader Maggie Williams will be traveling to The College of Wooster on May 23 to compete in the Power of the Pen State Tournament. Maggie will be one of only the top 20 percent of writers at all the Power of the Pen Regional competitions throughout Ohio to move on to the State Tournament.

Seven Bay Middle School students qualified at district tournaments to compete at the local regional tournament held at St. Joseph Academy in Cleveland on March 15, where 65 schools from six counties competed. Seventh-graders Maddie Bish, Maddey Clair, Jessica Eagleeye and Mason Smith; and eighth-graders Chloe Roberts and Jessica Rychel, as well as Maggie Williams, competed at that event. Helen Lanning, Bay Middle School language arts teacher, is the team's advisor.

Power of the Pen is a state writing competition meant to encourage creative writing. Students are given prompts and then use their skill and imagination to create written stories and essays that are judged anonymously.
