Westlake High School junior Pierce Gleespen received a Student Achievement Award from the West Shore Chamber of Commerce at the organization’s May 13 luncheon.

The Student Achievement Award recognizes a Westlake or Bay High School student employee or volunteer who has shown exemplary work performance. According to Gleespen’s nomination letter, he has done just that.

Gleespen was nominated by English teacher Laura Miller, the school’s student newspaper advisor. He is both a writer and staff editor of the paper, and spearheaded a new section on politics in which he has attempted to connect local and world politics to his fellow students. Miller called Gleespen “A remarkably mature, responsible and civically-engaged young person,” and said that he “Conducts himself with the work ethic of a person with far more years of experience.”

Recipients of the Student Achievement Award also receive a Certificate of Achievement and $50 each.
