Annual PTA ‘Night at the Races’ to fund BHS scholarships

The 29th annual Night at the Races sponsored by the Bay Village Council of PTAs will raise scholarship funds for the Class of 2017 on Saturday, Nov. 19, 6 to 10 p.m., at the Copper Cup in Westlake. Last year, the community’s generosity resulted in $12,000 for seven scholarships that were awarded to students pursuing degrees focusing on education or protecting the welfare of children.

“A byproduct of the scholarship is that perhaps we can encourage students to take on careers that help future generations in a meaningful way,” says Julie Lowry, co-chair of the event, which is one of the larger fundraisers in Bay Village for a couple of reasons. The dynamic and rewarding night out supports local students; and the outcome produces generous scholarships that defray the cost of college education.

“Bay is a giving community, and our students are a product of that,” says PTA Council President Cheryll McCarty, noting that the work of parents in the community who support events like Night at the Races sets a positive example.

McCarty expects a successful event this year, with 100 tickets available. “We’d love to see the tickets sell out, and to have people come out and have a good time knowing they are giving back to the schools and the community,” she says.

The $45 ticket prices includes heavy hors d'oeuvres, draft beer and wine. The Night at the Races theme complements a silent auction, featuring up to 75 baskets guests can bid on and win. Horse betting and 50/50 raffles will sweeten the scholarship pot and add to the evening’s excitement.

“It will be a lively night that helps Bay students pursue their career goals,” Lowry adds, relating how the event's proceeds “pay it forward” to students pursuing careers that will give back to the community.
