Holiday gatherings a good time to learn family history

As this year comes to a close and a new year is on the horizon, most of us will be visiting with family and friends. Do not overlook the opportunity to ask the older generation for family stories that will be lost to the ages, when they pass away. Too many of us regret not asking more of grandmother, grandfather, mom, dad, aunts and uncles, when we had the chance.

If you cannot visit in person this season, consider sending cards with a nice, handwritten note. Tell them you are interested in learning more about their lives. Perhaps, they will respond in kind. How nice to have a “hard copy” from a loved one that will not need an electronic device to view.

For those of us who waited too long to record the stories of the previous generation, there are numerous avenues to acquire more knowledge about them. Your local genealogical society is willing to help you.

On Wednesday, Nov. 15, Cuyahoga West Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society will hold a Genealogical Roundtable meeting for members and the public, at Westlake Porter Public Library, 27333 Center Ridge Road, from 7:00-8:30 p.m. All will have an opportunity to briefly share a recent triumph or roadblock, in the quest for learning more about an ancestor. For questions or more information about this meeting, email cuyahogawest@gmail.com.
