LBMS Mathletes bring home awards

Lee Burneson students Kathrine Xiao, Subratha Araselvan, Yehyun Choi and Roman Lucarelli were among the winners at a regional math competition.

Three Lee Burneson Middle School teams came home with awards from the Greater Cleveland Council of Teachers of Mathematics competition at Lake Ridge Academy in North Ridgeville.

Thirteen teams per grade level from across Cuyahoga and Lorain counties competed. The eighth-grade LBMS team of Kathrine Xiao and Subratha Araselvan, and the seventh-grade team of Roman Lucarelli, Yehyun Choi and Michelle Ho earned medals for scoring in the top 20 percent. The seventh-grade team of Juan Orellano and Andrew Hung earned a Champion blue ribbon for scoring in the top 60 percent.

Each team competed in four events – Six Places to Start, Mental Math Hurdles, Hurdles and The Pile. Teams worked together to solve problems and earn points. The contest supports and extends Ohio’s learning standards in mathematics.

LBMS teacher Lisa Zollos and Principal Amanda Musselman coached the students.
