Unity Spiritual Center celebrates the power of prayer

The Unity movement was founded on prayer. Myrtle Fillmore, founder of Unity, discovered the healing power of affirmative prayer when she healed her body of "tuberculosis" after being given just six months to live. It took two years, but as Myrtle affirmed the Truth, "I am a child of God and as such do not inherit sickness"; she recovered to live another 40 years!

As a result of her healing, people around the country wrote to Myrtle for healing prayer. Two years later, she and her husband, Charles, organized a prayer group that would later be known as Silent Unity. Silent Unity continues today to be the light of prayer for people around the world. As a 24-hour-a-day, 7-day-a-week prayer ministry, Silent Unity has been serving people of all faith traditions for over 100 years.

Twenty-five years ago, Unity established an annual World Day of Prayer that occurs the second Thursday in September. This year, the theme of World Day of Prayer is the "Courage to Heal." You and I are encouraged to know, "I am a healing presence."  Much like Myrtle came to understand all those years ago, we are children of God and as such we are whole and holy. As you and I know and affirm this Truth, the power of prayer can be at work in your life!

As part of the Unity Movement, Unity Spiritual Center in Westlake participates in the annual World Day of Prayer. We begin on Wednesday, Sept. 12, at 7 p.m. with our weekly Prayer Hour. For the next 24 hours, the prayer chaplains of Unity Spiritual Center will be focused on the healing power of affirmative prayer. There will be prayer activity during the entire 24-hour period which ends with a closing ceremony on Thursday, Sept. 13, at 7 p.m.

Past prayer activities have included a midnight walk on the labyrinth, making prayer bead bracelets, dancing our prayers, and sending cards of prayer to our local Westlake Police and Fire Departments as well as area schools. In true Unity tradition, all faiths are welcome to join us at any time during the 24-hour prayer vigil.

Knowing the power of prayer, we join in consciousness with each one in uplifting ourselves individually, as well as the collective consciousness of our planet, to know that we are all a healing presence. Together we can heal the darkness of ignorance that is in the world and call forth our loving light.

Rev. Joanne Rowden
