The Westlake Garden Club survives 2020

This year has been one of challenges and frustrations for the Westlake Garden Club. Our club year begins in March so, as a group, we have not met at all this year. The board met in March before the shut-down, had an in-person socially distanced meeting in the president’s driveway, and had a Zoom meeting.

We have tried to stay connected with members through a monthly newsletter and phone calls, and the new board has been elected for 2021. Sharing the presidency are Cathy Garlitz and Jean Smith; treasurer, Marie McCarthy; recording secretary, Anne Engel and Marsha McEntee; and program chair, Deb Dougherty.

Many of our members stayed busy tending their gardens during the summer and are caring for houseplants now. We decorated a holiday tree for the Cleveland Botanical Gardens’ Glow Festival which is open through Jan. 3, 2021. More than 30 affiliate clubs decorated trees and wreaths for this year's festival.

How do you plan during a pandemic? Until we can once again meet in person, our plan through June 2021 is for monthly Zoom board meetings and one or two Zoom general meetings with speakers. Thank goodness for the Zoom technology!  Beyond that, we hope to resume in-person meetings with interesting speakers and programs, field trips, and perhaps an evening program for the public. Please visit our website, www.westlakegardenclub.org, to view our Garden Scoop newsletters and for more information about the club. Stay well.
