West Shore Lions tradition celebrates original 13 colonies

Among this year's many Independence Day festivities in the City of Westlake was the West Shore Lions Club's annual bell-ringing ceremony at the Westlake Aquatic Center and Peterson Pool.

Cuyahoga County Representative Nan Baker introduced the event and read off some background information for those in attendance. Then, 13 kids lined up to ceremoniously tap out one chime for each of the 13 original colonies of the United States.

The tradition dates back to 1963 when President John F. Kennedy declared July 4 to be National Bell Ringing Day.
