Sally Knurek wins garden award

Sally Knurek's award-winning garden.

Sally Knurek, a former president of the Westlake Garden Club and a resident of Fairview Park, has been presented with an award for her Pollinator Garden by the Fairview Park Garden Club.

Knurek loves to garden and it has taken her three years of work and planning to develop this garden. "The strip (of land) along my driveway was covered with myrtle. As I was pulling it out it seemed like it was rooted in China," Knurek said. "It took all summer it get it under control."

In the fall of that first year she decided on planting creeping thyme and golden oregano as ground covers. "The thyme was loved by pollinators and prevented weeds from growing," Knurek said. The oregano provided a pop of color to brighten the other native and hybrid plants.

Her work has paid off and now that this is considered a "mature garden" the only maintenance required is to shear back the thyme when it gets leggy.

The award came with a sign that states Knurek is a Showcase Garden Award winner, which she can be display in her yard for a month, and a gift certificate to Dean's Garden Center.

Her award didn't surprise her friends in the Westlake Garden Club where Knurek's garden expertise is already well recognized. And now she has an award to prove it.
